Denver resident Derris Mayberry, 37, was convicted on federal charges of weapon and drug offenses after a recent court decision. As reported by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, a jury found Mayberry guilty on counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, which he is prohibited to carry due to previous convictions, and distributing fentanyl, an increasingly problematic drug in communities nationwide.

The case unfolded from events dating back to March 22, 2024, when during an undercover operation, Mayberry was identified as a dealer from whom an undercover officer, after being approached by a woman offering "dope," negotiated and purchased fentanyl pills, often referred to as "blues." The transaction took place in an alley close to the Colorado State Capitol and ended with Mayberry being apprehended at a nearby bus stop with both the marked $20 bill used in the drug buy, additional fentanyl pills and a loaded .22 caliber revolver were found on his person.

The conviction brings about Mayberry's sentencing, which will occur at a later date, under the regulation of United States District Court Judge Daniel D. Domenico. The Denver Police Department VICE unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives conducted the detailed investigation and Assistant United States Attorneys Theodore O’Brien and Celeste Rangel were responsible for the prosecution of the case, as obtained by U.S. Department of Justice.
