In what can only be described as a life-saving maneuver, two Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) deputies heroically intervened to protect a local family from an oncoming reckless driver. On a typical day gone awry, January 26th saw Cherish Hood and her children facing imminent danger as a car charged recklessly toward them while they left a Highlands Ranch grocery store. According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Connor Lacey and Field Training Officer Trent Hoffman were quick to respond, pulling their patrol vehicle in front of the speeding suspect, effectively preventing a near tragedy.
The deputies demonstrated exceptional calmness under pressure, a trait that no doubt comes with the territory for officers trained to safeguard civilians. Sheriff Tony Weekly commended the deputies for their bravery, as per Douglas County Sheriff's Office, "It’s a proud moment for me to recognize these gentlemen who do this every single day. They put themselves between good and evil, and they do it without hesitation." Their actions serve to remind the community of the potential dangers present in everyday life and the crucial role first responders play in containing them.
This poignant meeting between the family and the officers who averted potential calamity took place in Highlands Ranch, a community that is surely all the more thankful for the service of its deputies. Douglas County is, as Sheriff Weekly noted, "blessed to have people just like this protecting our residents," as obtained by Douglas County Sheriff's Office. The sense of gratitude can be felt deeply, not only were these deputies upholding their sworn duties, but their quick thinking and selflessness directly impacted the well-being of Hood and her family, offering them a second chance that might have been ripped away in an alternate, darker scenario.
