As the icy grip of winter weather closed in on the Chicago area, more than a dozen schools implemented delays or outright closures for Thursday, responding to hazardous road conditions. According to NBC Chicago, the River Forest School Corporation announced a two-hour delay, warning of treacherous roads and advising against serving breakfast at elementary schools.
The Emergency Closing Center, as reported by NBC Chicago, listed several schools adjusting to the freeze, including District #1 in Momence, Crown Point Community School Corp., and Tri-creek School Corporation, while District #209-U in Wilmington shuttered entirely. Wilmington Schools voiced concerns over "the icy and hazardous road conditions, especially on our rural roads," leading to the decision to cancel Thursday's classes. Sidewalks and intersections, where layers of ice remained unsalted, also posed a threat, amplifying the dangers of the slick terrain.
Travel was not advised given the conditions, as the National Weather Service earlier had cautioned residents against non-essential journeys, warning of "numerous accidents on icy roads, some serious," as reported by NBC Chicago. Moreover, the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications urged prudence, declaring "Slick is an understatement this morning on sidewalks and side streets!"
The unrelenting freeze did promise relief, albeit temporary. NBC Chicago's meteorologist Alicia Roman predicted that temperatures would ascend past the freezing point by mid-morning Thursday, laying the groundwork for thaw. "We'll need to wait until we get above freezing for things to thaw," Roman indicated, aware that even a glaze of ice might incite chaos upon the untreated roadways. Winds, she added, would surge in the afternoon, complicating the already vexing conditions.
The respite, however, could prove short-lived. CBS Chicago, relaying information from a report, mentioned the potential return of a sleet and snow concoction by Saturday afternoon, potentially setting the stage for another round of school delays and closures. In the interim, proactive measures such as salt trucks took to the streets.
