In a display of academic and practical prowess, the El Paso Community College (EPCC) showcased the vibrant intersections of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (S.T.E.A.M.) at an Open House on Monday. The event, free to the public, was held at the Valle Verde AST Building Flexitorium and featured a collaborative effort from departments including Architecture, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology, Kinesiology, Math, and Physics.
With the involvement of Career and Transfer Services, Recruitment, and Financial Aid, the gathering offered an informative platform for potential students and community members. According to EPCC, hands-on exhibits, such as the Kinesiology department's standing broad jump, Biology's brain and skeleton models, Art workshops, and Physics' angular momentum display, brought the concepts to life. Chemistry and Geology also presented interactive displays, providing a tactile learning experience.
Dr. Rebecca Escamilla, Valle Verde Campus Dean of Architecture, Art, Math, and Science, expressed her excitement to EPCC, stating, "It's very exciting, I love to see all of our faculty here, all united to promote their programs, and show students what EPCC has to offer them." She added, echoing the sentiment of community and shared purpose, "I am super excited; this is a lot of fun for me."
Children of all ages, along with students and adults from various backgrounds, congregated to learn and engage with department heads who stood, ready to provide information on their programs and courses. Angel Valdez, an EPCC Engineering student, noted the importance of such events, as obtained by EPCC, "This event is great to understand there are more opportunities out there. Engineering experience is really needed in the workforce and it's so useful, so it's great to have events like these for the community."
