An 18-year-old woman was stabbed near her heart in Silver City on Sunday evening, and the man police believe did it is still on the run. Silver City Police Department detectives have identified 34-year-old Dominick Frank Duran as the suspect and are warning residents not to approach him, calling him armed and dangerous.
According to the Silver City Daily Press, officers were dispatched just after 7 p.m. Sunday to the Snappy Mart at Broadway and Hudson Street, where they found the victim in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked in the lot. Police Captain Antonio Carrillo said the 18-year-old had been stabbed near her heart, according to details from the arrest affidavit and a department press release. The first officer on scene began administering first aid before Silver City Fire Department personnel took over, and the victim drifted in and out of consciousness as she was stabilized and rushed first to Gila Regional Medical Center before being flown on to a hospital in El Paso.
How Detectives Traced the Attack to Corbin Street
Police detectives and patrol officers determined the stabbing actually happened blocks away, at 223 S. Corbin St., before another person drove the wounded woman to the convenience store, per the arrest affidavit. That address sits along a stretch of South Corbin Street that has seen violence before — a 17-year-old girl was shot nearby at Market and Corbin streets in March, a case that led to the April arrest of a neighborhood resident, as reported by Grant County Beat.
Once officers realized their suspect had fled the scene, they combed the area around the convenience store on foot before extending the search into the Big Ditch, the deep arroyo that cuts through downtown. The channel was carved by flash floods between 1890 and 1910 that destroyed Silver City's original Main Street, leaving behind a 55-foot-deep gash along San Vicente Creek that today functions as a park, according to the Silver City MainStreet Project. Despite the search, police did not locate Duran on Sunday.
A Suspect With a Prior Run-In With Police
Duran is described by police as 6 feet tall, weighing 229 pounds, with brown eyes and a bald head. A warrant for his arrest was issued Monday, and he now faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Under New Mexico Statutes § 30-3-5(C), aggravated battery involving a deadly weapon or great bodily harm is classified as a third-degree felony, per Justia Law.
Duran's current case is in Grant County's court system.
