The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is bringing a fresh approach to education through its Montessori programs, now in the spotlight during the National Montessori Education Week. As they celebrate this educational style distinct from traditional classroom methods, EPISD emphasizes developing independence, creativity, and leadership in students at Green Elementary and Moreno Elementary.

Adopting the century-old educational philosophy crafted by Maria Montessori, an Italian educator and physician who championed student-centered learning, these programs in El Paso are redefining how children engage with their educational experiences. As obtained by EPISD, Cecilia Perez, Principal of Moreno Montessori, stated, "Our Montessori classrooms are designed to build confidence, compassion, and leadership." The claim speaks to an environment where naturally curious children, eager to explore, are provided a safe and engaging space to develop.

The structure of El Paso ISD's Montessori initiative is distinct, featuring mixed-age classrooms that blend ages for collaborative learning. Older students, taking on mentorship roles, lead by example and provide younger peers with guidance; conversely, the younger students soak up wisdom from their older classmates. This approach fosters leadership in older students and a nurturing, educational climate for the younger ones.

Montessori programs extend their benefits far beyond traditional academic learning, aiming to equip students with practical life skills. Among these, as described by Dominique Vasquez, the parent whose daughter attends the program, includes building a foundation of independence and core academic abilities vital for her child's lifelong success.

For families intrigued by this alternative educational method, El Paso ISD is hosting information sessions in March at Green Elementary Montessori on March 1 at 10 a.m. and Moreno Montessori on March 6 at 9 a.m. and once again at 5:30 p.m. Interested parents are encouraged to learn more about the program and apply for the 2025-26 academic year ahead.
