In El Paso, a community is witnessing the ripple effects of one high school student's resolve to make tangible change. Max Estorga, a dual credit student at El Paso Community College (EPCC), seized a 7-week opportunity at Harvard University's Secondary School Program last summer. There, he not only attained eight credits but stood his ground in rigorous courses such as Psychology and Human Ethics: An Introduction to Moral Philosophy. As reported by EPCC News, this May will mark his graduation from the college program, with his high school commencement at Silva Magnet High School to follow in June.

Beyond academia, Max is actively pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts and is a noted member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. An integral part of the journey to becoming an Eagle Scout involves spearheading a service project, an initiative born from the individual's character and leadership promise. Max's service project titled 'Suitcases for Children in Crisis' hits close to home in El Paso, addressing the plight of children confronted with the stark reality of Child Protective Services intervention. As obtained by EPCC News, Max revealed his insights, “I never realized the devastating impact a utilitarian item could have on diminishing perception of self-worth." With over 50 pieces of luggage already collected, Max is striving to replace the undignified option of trash bags with suitcases for these vulnerable children.

Max's initiative resonates with the ethos of his community, forging a partnership with the Rainbow Room of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Service (DFPS), according to EPCC News. This local effort stocks essential items for children who have had to face abuse or neglect. Max spoke of the profound outreach and support, “And I'm blown away by the response! That makes me feel good, too. I've struck a note with the people in the community."
