An automobile accident on US-17 in Green Cove Springs has claimed the life of a driver and seriously injured two others. According to News4Jax, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon around 2 p.m. at the intersection with Bayard Street.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a collision involved a Toyota 4Runner, which, for unknown reasons, veered into the southbound lanes while traveling northbound. Crashing into a Ford F-150 that was stopped at the time, the Toyota then overturned. From Fleming Island, the 78-year-old woman driving the Toyota was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The crash also left a 15-year-old girl and a 55-year-old man with serious injuries; both were passengers in the 4Runner. The driver of the F-150, hailing from Green Cove Springs, suffered minor injuries, per reports by First Coast News.

Their identity has not been released by FHP, pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, the agency continues to investigate the crash's circumstances, and it is yet unclear what led to the fatal swerve of the 4Runner across the median into opposing traffic. In a statement obtained by Action News Jax, FHP described the aftermath as the 4Runner "overturned after the collision."

The injured 15-year-old girl and 55-year-old man were swiftly taken to the hospital, with the Ford pickup truck driver treated for his injuries, which were described as minor, on the scene.
