A tragic collision on a slick and slushy section of I-15 in Weber County early Thursday morning resulted in the death of a Mini Cooper driver. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, the unfortunate incident occurred near milepost 341, where a box truck was forced to a halt in a gore area due to an engine issue, and the car lost control, ultimately leading to fatal contact between the two vehicles.
The driver of the Peterbuilt box truck, weighing in at 26,000 pounds, stopped between the southbound lanes of I-15 and the eastbound merge onto I-84 following a warning light indicating an immediate shutdown was necessary, the halted truck was then struck by the Mini Cooper, whose driver succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The incident led to the closure of the merge lane to eastbound I-84 for approximately two and a half hours while authorities conducted their investigation at the scene.
As detailed by the Utah Department of Public Safety, the driver of the Peterbuilt did not sustain any injuries while occupants of the Mini Cooper faced the dire consequences of the icy road conditions and unforeseen mechanical issues that led to this fatal moment. The driver's identity has yet to be officially released, pending notification of next of kin.
