FC Cincinnati is making a power play just before the MLS season gets into full swing, acquiring attacking midfielder Evander da Silva Ferreira, better known as Evander, from the Portland Timbers in a deal that has reshaped the league's financial landscape. The Brazilian playmaker joins the Orange and Blue in a transaction valued at $12 million, with performance incentives that could add another $150,000, according to WLWT.
In what is being touted as the "largest cash-for-player trade in league history," Evander has signed on with Cincinnati through the 2027 MLS season, with the club holding an option for 2028. Under the terms of the deal, the Timbers retain a percentage of any future sale or trade of the player, as reported by FC Cincinnati's official announcement. This move follows the recent update in MLS regulations that allow for unlimited out-of-pocket funds to be used in acquiring players within the league, a shift that seems poised to invite more blockbuster deals down the line.
"We’re thrilled to welcome Evander and his family to Cincinnati," Chris Albright, General Manager of FC Cincinnati said, emphasizing the player's achievements and fit with the team's ambitions. "Evander has proven himself as one of the best players in our league, and his creativity and vision will be a great addition to our attack. He’s an excellent teammate, and we’re excited about how he’ll fit with this group," Albright additionally told FOX19.
Evander, 26, has established himself as a formidable force in MLS, finishing last season as an MVP finalist and part of the MLS Best XI. His remarkable tally of 15 goals, tied for the league high with 19 assists, earned him second-most in MLS last season, only behind the stellar performance of Inter Miami's Lionel Messi. "I'm really happy, and I’m looking forward to the start of the season," Evander described his anticipation for joining his new team. On joining the squad he articulated, "When I received the video of the stadium and training facility, and all the fans as well, I just got even more excited to be part of the team, to be part of the club," in a statement obtained by FC Cincinnati’s official portal.
The acquisition of Evander by FC Cincinnati marks a significant investment in the club’s on-field talent, signaling a clear intent to compete at the highest levels within MLS. As for the player himself, the move offers a new chapter in a career that has seen impressive spells in Denmark with FC Midtjylland and beginnings in Brazil with CR Vasco da Gama. He now steps into TQL Stadium with the support of Cincinnati fans eagerly awaiting the creative impact and winning mentality he brings to the pitch.
