
Hayward witnessed its first fatal collision of the year yesterday morning when an SUV struck a pedestrian in a hit-and-run incident, Hayward police reported. At around 6:56 a.m., officers were called to Hesperian Boulevard and Sueirro Street, where witnesses had already discovered a 51-year-old male in the center median and alerted emergency services. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, the Hayward resident was pronounced deceased at the scene. Hayward Police Department said the pedestrian's identity is withheld pending identification by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.
According to the information provided by the police, the incident is being treated as a hit-and-run. Witnesses described the suspect's vehicle as a white, medium-sized SUV. The vehicle was last seen going southbound on Hesperian Boulevard from Sueirro Street. As medical personnel were responding to the victim, the driver of the SUV had already fled the scene before the officers' arrival, leaving them with attempts at life-saving that ended futile.
