Gary Community Bands Together to Rescue Dog Stranded on Rooftop; Safe Thanks to Local Officers and Tree CompanySource: Lake County, Ind., Sheriff’s Department

A dog found in a precarious position atop a roof in Gary, Indiana, was safely rescued Tuesday afternoon. This successful operation was the result of collaborative efforts from local law enforcement, a tree company, and the community. The Lake County Sheriff's Department reported that the dog was spotted stuck on the roof of a three-story residence around 1 p.m., near 18th and Malcolm X Drive.

After the fire department declined to respond due to the potential risk to their team, Lake County Sheriff's officers took the initiative. Officer Vicari, first on the scene after being flagged down by a concerned citizen, worked with Sergeant Salomon to enlist the expertise of Townsend Tree Company. The tree professionals provided a boom lift, aiding in the safe retrieval of the dog from its perilous situation. In a statement obtained by WGN-TV, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. praised the rescuers: "I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to both Officer Vicari and Sergeant Salomon for their bravery and compassion."

Post-rescue, Gary Animal Control, and Silver Strays took custody of the four-legged survivor, ensuring it received the necessary care.

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration, Sheriff Martinez elaborated further in a release saying, "Also, a big thanks to Townsend Tree Company, Gary Animal Control, Silver Strays and all of the members of the community who pitched in to save the dog. It’s wonderful to see so many people working together to help a animal in need." This sentiment was echoed in coverage by FOX 32 Chicago, showcasing the community's collective efforts in protecting one of its most vulnerable members.
