The sands of Miami Beach were transformed into a gastronomic arena last week, with Guy Fieri at the helm of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival's Tournament of Champions. The event, detailed by WSVN, saw 24 chefs from various backgrounds throw down in a "food fight" featuring eclectic dishes ranging from puffed pasta chips to Indonesian chicken stew. As the competition unfolded, a special touch was added with each guest given a coin to cast their vote for the best culinary creation.
Fieri, who also took time to cook for the Florida International University students organizing the fest, brought energy to the Miami crowds craving those unique 305 flavors. "I am a mofongo junkie," Fieri confessed in an interview obtained by WSVN. In order for them to serve us, Fieri's rescue trailer was ready to supply needed sustenance, playing host to the volunteer students as they were treated to his signature dishes.
Meanwhile, the Instagram account of World Red Eye gave the play-by-play of the culinary action, as reported at World Red Eye on Instagram. The competitive event featured teams led by past winners of Fieri's shows, including celebrity chefs Brooke Williamson, Maneet Chauhan, Tiffani Faison, and Mei Lin. Combining the talents of TOC veterans and new blood, the chefs faced off in a spectacle of taste and imagination, underscored by a People's Choice trophy for the team that garnered the most votes from attendees.
The buzz of last Friday's event wasn't just contained within the confines of the competition. The true flavor of the festival, as Fieri noted, was in the opportunity to engage with future hospitality leaders. "That's the fun about it, is that they challenge us to be better," Fieri told WSVN. FIU student Gabriela Geller echoed this sentiment, expressing surprise and appreciation post the Fieri-crafted meal that left her filled with inspiration.
In the end, Maneet Chauhan was named the victor of the culinary battle, choosing Autism Speaks as the beneficiary for her $5,000 prize. Consistent with its mission of education and industry engagement, all proceeds from the South Beach Wine & Food Festival will benefit FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. The feast of taste and talent continues through the weekend at various locations.
