In efforts to bolster rail safety, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has recently greenlighted a project to enhance the safety measures at a highway-rail grade crossing near Camp Point in Adams County. The initiative involves installing new automatic warning devices along with updated circuitry at the 2200 Avenue crossing over the BNSF Railway Company's tracks, as detailed in an announcement from the ICC.
According to the reports, the push for upgrades comes with a hefty $317,704 price tag. However, a significant portion of the bill – 95 percent of the signal design and construction costs, not in exceed $301,818 – will be footed by the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF). BNSF will be responsible for the remaining 5 percent, coupled with the necessary upkeep for the new systems post-installation.
ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan underscored the importance of such improvements, stating, "Highway-rail grade crossing upgrades prevent collisions, keeping pedestrians and motorists safer on our roadways." The work is expected to be completed within an 18-month period from the order date. Temporary STOP signs will be erected by BNSF to substitute for the existing YIELD signs until the automatic warning devices are operational.
Established in 1955, the GCPF has been a pivotal player in bolstering the state's highway-rail safety, allocating motor fuel tax revenue towards a wide array of projects. These have ranged from new warning system installations to the restructuring of existing public crossings, spotlighting Illinois' unwavering dedication to safeguarding its residents on roadways intersecting with railway lines. The General Assembly sets aside $42 million annually to fuel this fund, ensuring these vital safety enhancements continue to unfold across the state.
The Illinois Commerce Commission, an entity responsible for overseeing not just utility services but also ensuring public safety standards among intrastate commercial carriers and railway operations, invites the public to remain vigilant around rail crossings. They encourage adherence to all safety protocols designed to maintain the security and well-being of everyone in these shared spaces.
