Jacksonville's dollar store burglary spree has come to an end with the arrest of a suspect responsible for multiple break-ins. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced on their Facebook page that 36-year-old Michael Wilt was apprehended after a string of burglaries targeting dollar stores in the area.
The initial break-in that started the investigation occurred at a dollar store on Blanding Boulevard, where surveillance captured a suspect smashing the front door, breaking into a display case, and stealing cigarettes. This incident was not an isolated one, as several, other dollar stores reported similar burglaries. The District 4 Violent Crime Task Force took on the case, monitoring the targeted locations for any signs of the culprit.
Task force officers, while staking out a store on 103rd Street, caught Wilt in the act of breaking the front door in an attempt to carry out another burglary. He was taken into custody on the spot. The evidence from surveillance videos of the previous break-ins was key in linking Wilt to the crimes.
Following the arrest, the Sheriff's Office confirmed that Wilt is now being held at the Duval County Jail. The success of this operation highlights the determination and patient work of the task force officers in putting an end to the series of burglaries that shook the local dollar store community.
