The Keanakolu Orchard in the Hilo Forest Reserve on Hawaiʻi Island closes for a brief hiatus. Starting today, the orchard, also known as Humuʻula Orchard, will undergo routine maintenance, the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has announced. This temporary closure is expected to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the popular site located at a lofty 6,000 feet elevation. According to the DOFAW release, the maintenance stint will last until Friday.
Keanakolu Orchard in the Hilo Forest Reserve is home to a variety of non-native fruit trees, including apple, cherry, plum, and apricot. Until now, visitors could obtain permits online or at DOFAW’s Hawaiʻi Island District Office in Hilo for personal fruit collection. However, access is now on hold as the orchard undergoes maintenance.
Patrons planning to visit the orchard during this time are advised to adjust their schedules and consider exploring other areas of the expansive Hilo Forest Reserve. Once maintenance is complete, Keanakolu Orchard will reopen, offering visitors the chance to enjoy its fresh fruit once again.
