A Kent police officer shot a 58-year-old man on a Des Moines beach last night after the man reportedly threatened himself and his family with a gun. The incident occurred near the 27000 block of 10th Avenue South and led to a quick response from authorities, who used foot patrols and a drone to locate the man after he had left his home, as per KOMO News.
The situation escalated when officers found the man on a nearby beach, at which point a Kent police officer shot him during the encounter. The sequence of events is not entirely clear, but what is known is that medical personnel provided immediate first aid before transporting the man to Harborview Medical Center, as noted by KING 5. His current condition was not publicly disclosed beyond his receiving care.
Adding to the chaotic scene, another officer sustained injuries during the incident but was not the officer responsible for discharging their weapon. According to KOMO News, this officer was treated at a local hospital and later released. The Valley Independent Investigative Team is now handling the investigation of this police use of force incident, with the involved officer placed on administrative leave per usual procedures as the probe continues.
