A concerning incident unfolded on the streets of Key West over the weekend. Joseph Ignacio Silva, a 29-year-old man, was arrested yesterday after a tense standoff with police. Key West law enforcement reported the man brandished a "large knife" and charged at an officer, leading to charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault. The encounter began with a domestic incident call in the Poinciana Plaza neighborhood's 1600 block of Ellsberg Court, Local 10 reports.
After the initial confrontation with the officer, Silva retreated into an apartment, resulting a barricade situation that required specialized units to coax him into surrendering peacefully. Silva, who has a lengthy criminal history including battering law enforcement, was on probation at the time of this latest arrest. Now he finds himself back behind bars, with no bond as a detainee in Monroe County jail, according to the same report from Local 10.
Details surrounding the incident indicate that the police were responding to a domestic disturbance when they encountered Silva. He has been charged with both attempted murder and aggravated assault, according to Gwen Filosa Media. No injuries were reported during the standoff that concluded yesterday.
It is not the first time Silva finds himself in conflict with the law. With more than a dozen arrests and a history of crimes throughout the Florida Keys, state records note Silva has previously served time in prison. His ongoing struggle with adhering to the marges of the law continues, as his probation was not set to end until May 13, Local 10 details. As of this afternoon, the likelihood of an extended stay behind bars is high for Silva.
