If you're in Las Cruces this February and in search of a little romance or literary enrichment, the Las Cruces Public Libraries have you covered with their "February is for Lovers" event series. Kicking off the month's activities, a free screening of "Love in the Time of Cholera" will take place from 2-4:30 p.m. on February 10 in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, the movie is a cinematic adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel and is rated R. The library's Latiné-X Lit Book Club carries on the theme, set to discuss both the book and its film adaptation on February 25 from 12:30-1:30 p.m., also in the Staff Conference Room, according to the City of Las Cruces.
As part of the library's commitment to language learning and cultural appreciation, participants in the English as Second Language Film Club will get a chance to engage with another cinematic classic, "West Side Story," from 1961, on February 15 from 1-3:30 p.m., also situated conveniently in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, this event will not only screen the film famous for its tale mirroring "Romeo and Juliet" but also include a practice session for pronunciation of English through reading scenes from the movie. It should be noted that the movie stands as a historic piece touching upon cultural representation issues relevant to the current times, particularly within the Latino community.
The Las Cruces Public Libraries don't just stop at films, there's a curated collection of Latiné-X romance reading list available for those visiting the reference desk, and to top it off, the teen section will feature a special "Love is Love" book display throughout the entire month.
