Chicago police were involved in a fatal shooting of a man in North Lawndale on Sunday morning, after officers responded to a reported robbery in progress. According to Chicago Sun-Times, officers arrived at the 1800 block of South Ridgeway Avenue around 10:47 a.m. and engaged in a foot pursuit with the suspect, who allegedly exchanged gunfire with police at multiple locations.
The exchange resulted in the man being wounded and later transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. As per the details provided by the NBC Chicago, the officers on the scene rendered first aid before the man's transportation. A weapon was recovered at one of scene of the encounter. Responding officers were also taken to the hospital for observation following the incident.
Standard procedure following such events, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave for 30 days, during which time the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) will conduct an investigation into the shooting.
Details surrounding the number of officers who discharged their weapon have not been made clear.
