A routine call escalated into a tense standoff yesterday when Memphis Police officers responded to a shots-fired situation on North Cabana Circle, with the incident culminating in an officer-involved shooting that left a male suspect critically injured.
The confrontation began around 10:50 a.m. and swiftly led to the suspect being shot near Hawthorne Street and Vollentine Avenue, where Memphis Police recovered a rifle and over 100 rounds of ammunition after the suspect, directed multiple times to drop his weapon, failed to comply, and an officer fired for reasons that are still being investigated, the department is concurrently offering support to the officer involved and to others impacted by the day's events, according to Memphis Police Department's Facebook page.
During the incident, Vollentine Elementary School was put on lockdown as a safety measure, given its proximity just two blocks from the shooting site, though the restrictions have since been lifted after officials secured the area. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was then transported to Regional One, where he is currently listed in critical condition.
