As the Memphis region prepares for a significant drop in temperature, Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) are urging customers to conserve energy. The National Weather Service predicts wind chill values could drop to 6 degrees last night, and the utility companies are asking for community cooperation to prevent overloading the electrical grid during peak times.
According to a release from the City of Germantown, MLGW announced that the critical energy-saving periods will be from 6 to 10 a.m. today and tomorrow. These periods coincide with an extreme cold warning for Memphis and surrounding areas.
To help ease the strain on the power grid, TVA and MLGW are advising customers to adjust their energy usage. Homeowners are encouraged to set thermostats to 68 degrees or lower, unplug non-essential devices such as electric vehicles and space heaters, and reschedule energy-intensive activities like using clothes dryers and dishwashers.
