The Miami-Dade charter school IT director, Michael Rodriguez, was arrested and charged with multiple counts relating to child pornography. The 32-year-old, employed at Pinecrest Cove Preparatory Academy, was charged after deputies received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that connected him to the disturbing material, according to reports from Local 10 and CBS News Miami.
In the wake of the allegations, Rodriguez has to immediately stop working at the charter school. Pinecrest Cove sent an email to parents ensuring that there was "no reason to believe" that the investigation into Rodriguez was related to their students or school operations and reaffirmed their commitment to "maintaining a safe and secure environment for all." The administration's statement was provided to CBS News Miami, which echoes similar sentiments regarding student safety and well-being.
During a court hearing, the judge upheld a $5,000 bond for each of the seven charges Rodriguez faced, totaling a $35,000 bond. His defense attorney, Ramon De La Cabada, had argued that his client was not a flight risk, a notion that the prosecutors challenged by requesting a Level 3 GPS monitoring system. However, the judge decided not to order the GPS monitoring. Additionally, a stay-away order prohibited Rodriguez from returning to the school. The suspect's family members, including his sister who is in law enforcement, attended the hearing and are considering relocation since their current residence is near a nursery.
Rodriguez was taken into custody by MDSO ICAC detectives after admitting to both viewing and sending child pornography to himself while at work. According to documents cited from CBS News Miami reports, Rodriguez was "adamant that he only viewed the criminal material while at work in his private office due to the area being obscured from the security cameras within the school." On his office computer and USB drive, detectives found several folders containing explicit images, including one labeled "Random Girls" with files indicating children as young as four years old.
Earlier incidents at Pinecrest Cove, including the suspension of two students in 2023 for creating nude photos of classmates using artificial intelligence, were noted but unconfirmed to be connected to Rodriguez's arrest.
