Miami Man Charged in String of Rooftop Burglaries Involving Cigarettes and Lottery TicketsSource: Miami-Dade Corrections

Daniel Perez, a 54-year-old man from Miami, was arrested on Monday, facing charges including burglary of an occupied structure and grand theft. He is also charged with possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief, according to Local 10. The arrest is linked to a series of rooftop burglaries he allegedly committed in the city.

Perez’s crimes began in January, where he reportedly cut holes in the roofs of businesses to steal cigarette products and lottery scratch-off tickets. "The suspect used the same modus operandi (M.O.) in each case," stated the police department in a news release obtained by Local 10. After committing the burglaries, Perez allegedly attempted to redeem the stolen lottery tickets at various locations.

Surveillance video helped authorities identify and capture Perez in the area of Northwest 15th Avenue and 33rd Street. During his arrest, officers found stolen cigarettes and cash that matched items reported stolen from businesses.

Perez's arrest was credited to the collaborative efforts of the Criminal Investigations Division and patrol officers in Miami. One business, located at 2201 SW 16th St., was reported to have suffered $1,500 in damages and had $2,000 worth of stolen cigarettes and lottery tickets, according to Local 10.

Perez is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. At the time of his arrest, he was out on bond for a previous burglary. Perez appeared before a judge on Wednesday, who appointed him a public defender. His case is pending in court.
