Travelers heading up north on Interstate 35 should be ready to skip their usual break at the Clinton County rest area starting this Friday. The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced the closure of the northbound rest area just south of Lathrop for a significant remodeling project, contracted to Herner Construction Co. According to MoDOT's website, the renovation is intended to enhance accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and to give the facility a full interior and exterior makeover.
The revamp will deliver both aesthetic and functional upgrades, including an added interior vestibule, a family restroom, and a revamped vending area. It seems commuters will have to hold on a bit longer for their pit stops, as the rest area won't be available again until October 1. The entrance ramp will be closed off to the public for the duration of the project, so it's best to plan ahead for alternative spots to rest or refresh.
With the assured absence of this pit stop, MoDOT is urging drivers to practice safe road habits. "MoDOT asks drivers to work with us by always buckling up, keeping your phone down, slowing down and moving over in work zones," they outline on their webpage. They also recommend travelers to keep updated on ongoing and potential work zones by checking their online traveler information map.
For those accustomed to pulling over at this particular rest area, this temporary closure is an inconvenience, but one that promises substantial improvements in the long run. With increased focus on inclusive design and amenities that cater to a wider range of needs, motorists can look forward to a more accommodating stopover once the construction wraps up.
