Commuters in Jefferson County should brace for changes as the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced a significant traffic reroute on southbound I-55. Starting from 8:00 p.m. this Friday, vehicles will be directed onto newly built median pavement. The transition will span from just north of Central Avenue to south of the I-55/US 67 interchange, as reported by MoDOT. The shift is scheduled to be completed by 10:00 a.m. next Monday, setting the stage for the old southbound I-55 pavement and bridges to be dismantled.
This pivot is not just about redirection, but also about demolition, paving the way for more than just car tires. The crumbling infrastructure currently straddling Central Ave, 3rd St, and US 67 is slotted for removal. Motorists usually taking the southbound US 67 loop ramp to join southbound I-55 will now need to follow a six-month detour. From Friday, February 28, the loop will be off-limits as the southbound I-55 bridge over US 67 is knocked down for a rebuild.
The detour will funnel southbound US 67 traffic onto US 61 to reach the I-55 interchange (Exit 170), where drivers can resume travel on southbound I-55. MoDOT has assured that the detours will be clearly marked for drivers navigating the area. While the new traffic configuration is part of a broader initiative to enhance the longevity and safety of the roadway, MoDOT has noted that all construction and traffic shifts are subject to change depending on the weather.
