Details emerging from a Mercury News report suggest that the collision occurred when members of a large assemblage of motorcyclists, numbering around 100, arbitrarily lifted the railroad crossing arms to let the group pass despite the imminent approach of the oncoming train bound for Oakland. San Leandro police Capt. Abe Teng described the actions leading to the tragic impact, which claimed the life of the female passenger on the spot and left the male driver critically injured and transported to a hospital, while no other riders were reported injured. It wasn't known if any were detained.
The identity of the deceased woman remains unreleased as her next of kin are yet to be notified about the dreadful incident. The police also did not disclose whether the motorcycle riders were affiliated with a club or merely a group of acquaintances journeying together. The woman and the man involved in the accident reportedly wore their helmets during the collision.
