Officers will be on high alert during this campaign, leveraging national statistics that sober us to the reality: as per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 37 people in the United States succumb daily to drunk-driving accidents, which translates into the loss of a life every 39 minutes and even though these tragedies are entirely preventable the numbers persist in their stark warning of a community endangered, New Orleans Police Department News reports. The New Orleans Police Department has set its determination on heightened patrols and visibility efforts tailored to target those driving under the influence and to maintain the secure transit of motorists.
Speaking on the initiative, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick emphasized the gravity of the endeavor. "We want to see Mardi Gras celebrated, but celebrated safely," she told New Orleans Police Department News. "We need commitment from our community members that they'll keep the streets free of drunk drivers so that everyone can have a safe holiday. This is a campaign to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal, and it takes lives. Help us protect the community and put an end to this senseless behavior."
