In an extraordinary turn along I-41, a couple's commute turned into a delivery room just off of Silver Spring. As reported by CBS 58, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from a man whose wife was in the throes of labor early on Thursday, unable to reach a hospital in time.
Amidst a snowfall that delayed first responder arrival, it was the father who stepped into the breach—bringing his child into the world on the side of the highway. A Milwaukee Fire Battalion Chief, as stated by CBS 58, accompanied the family afterward to the hospital, ensuring their safety amid less than ideal circumstances.
"L" Velazquez, who found themselves amid the morning's unusual scene while en route to the airport, recounted to Fox 6 Now her glimpse into the impromptu delivery room. "There was a man standing outside the door then when you saw inside the car there was a lady who was seated back," she said. "You can see there was blankets or towels laid out obviously seeing that you can only assume it's delivering a baby just off on the side of the road."
Despite the traffic tie-up and frigid outdoor conditions, the Milwaukee Fire Department stated that a physician, helping to deliver the baby, had been successful before their team's arrival. The fire department assured WISN that the mother and newborn were transferred to a hospital and are faring well.
