Freshman Republican Senator Brian Guthrie from Bixby is making headway in the Oklahoma legislative arena, having recently moved two bills forward through their initial Senate committees. Senate Bill 20, focused on transportation, and Senate Bill 944, aimed at curbing the dangers of hazing, both represent key interests in Guthrie’s legislative aims, according to the Oklahoma Senate.
SB 20 received a nod of approval from the Senate Aeronautics and Transportation Committee, with a unanimous vote in favor. The bill aims to allow street-legal utility vehicles to operate on U.S. highways that have a posted speed limit of 50 mph or less – a potentially significant change for residents. Guthrie said, "The advancement of this legislation is a crucial step forward for transportation in Bixby and for communities across our state that are facing similar challenges related to connectivity and mobility within their transportation infrastructure," in a statement obtained by the Oklahoma Senate's press release. He expressed eagerness to continue working on the legislation and seeing it "across the finish line" to benefit local communities.
Meanwhile, Senate Bill 944, which seeks to strengthen Oklahoma's stance against hazing in educational institutions, has passed through the Senate Public Safety Committee. The bill looks to increase penalties and fines for hazing that jeopardizes an individual's physical or mental health and introduces a felony charge for incidents resulting in bodily harm, as per the Oklahoma Senate.
Addressing hazing, Guthrie emphasized, "Senate Bill 944 will increase accountability and strengthen deterrence against hazing in all forms. By clarifying definitions, increasing penalties, promoting awareness and education, and encouraging reporting, we send a clear message: Oklahoma will not tolerate actions that endanger the health or wellbeing of our youth," he told the Oklahoma Senate's press release. The bill also provides protections for students and organizations who step forward to report hazing.
With these measures, Senator Guthrie has started to shape his legislative portfolio, reinforcing community safety in both the transportation sector and educational environments. Both bills are set to undergo further consideration in the full Senate, with the potential to bring about tangible changes to Oklahoma's laws and the everyday lives of its citizens.
