BART has decided there's more to public transit than transportation. On February 14, to connect people beyond their regular commute, BART is running what it's calling a "speed dating/friend making" event on a moving train. According to the Bay Area Rapid Transit, adults aged 18 to 35 are invited to board a special train set aside for this evening of mingling, with activities meant to facilitate romantic connections and possible friendships.

For those interested in taking their chances on love or new acquaintances, the event requires a prior RSVP, and space, as it turned out, was limited. The announcement was well received, with all 200 spots filling up in less than 12 hours, showing a surprising level of enthusiasm among the Bay Area's young adults eager to participate. As mentioned by BART in a social media post, "We are overjoyed by the enthusiasm for this event," and people were encouraged to sign up for email notifications for future endeavors.

The mixer will kick off at Downtown Berkeley Station at 6:45 p.m., taking participants on a ride to 24th St./Mission and back without making stops. Name tags will allow individuals to specify what they're looking for, love or friendship, amid a Valentine's-themed backdrop geared to inspire connections. With safety in mind, the transit agency has also assured additional staff and a strong security presence during the event.

BART has positioned the initiative as part of a larger strategy to foster community engagement and add a spark of creativity to the everyday use of its services. The transit agency has been clear in its communications regarding conduct expectations, stating, "BART has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual and gender-based harassment, consuming alcoholic beverages and illicit substances, and engaging in disruptive/disturbing behavior." Those found in violation will be promptly removed and may face disciplinary action, BART staff informed under the rotunda, festooned with heart-shaped balloons, likely intended for a romantic atmosphere, as cited by BART.
