
An overturned semi-truck has significantly impacted morning traffic around downtown Cincinnati, prompting road closures and major delays. The crash occurred on westbound Fort Washington Way/U.S. 50 just outside the Lytle Tunnel around 6 a.m., as reported by FOX19. The Cincinnati Police Department has confirmed the shutdown of all lanes on westbound Fort Washington Way and southbound Interstate 71 through the Lytle Tunnel, likely affecting the morning commute.
Authorities have advised drivers to expect to remain disrupted for several hours, with traffic being diverted onto Third Street or the Reading Road exits in downtown Cincinnati. To navigate around the accident site, commuters are suggested to take west to Third Street to access southbound I-75 and cross the Ohio River into Northern Kentucky via the Brent Spence Bridge. The police also recommend detouring to the Norwood Lateral, the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway, or I-275 to reach southbound I-75 further north on I-71, as per FOX19.
In addition to the route closures announced, northbound I-471 to Fort Washington Way and southbound I-71 into downtown Cincinnati at Lytle Tunnel have also been sealed off, as stated in a news release by Sgt. Anthony Mitchell with the Cincinnati Police Department and covered by WCPO. The police are directing all southbound I-71 traffic off before the tunnel, and the affected area is before the Brent Spence Bridge area, as reported by Local 12's Jen Dalton.
Fortunately, the semi-driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, and no hazardous materials were involved. "there were no serious injuries or hazardous material involved in the crash," confirmed authorities in statements obtained by Local12 and WCPO. Recovery and cleanup efforts are expected to keep the highway closed, adding strain on an already congested traffic system because southbound I-471 on the Big Mac Bridge into Newport has been shut down since November 1 due to a massive fire. In light of this, Cincinnati drivers have had to adapt rapidly to the evolving road usage patterns, bearing the weight of a city's ceaseless motion and commerce.
