The quaint town of Pearson, Georgia, usually flies under the radar, but recent events have thrust it into the spotlight. Pearson's Mayor, Robert “Buster” Johnson, age 49, has been arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) on an array of charges, shaking the very foundation of the small community's trust in its local government. According to a GBI press release, Mayor Johnson is facing serious legal scrutiny, including charges such as criminal attempt to hinder the apprehension of a criminal, influencing witnesses, and various forms of theft and bribery, among others.
Stemming from a series of complaints about the mayor's conduct, the Alapaha Judicial Circuit District Attorney's office initiated this now unraveling saga, shedding light on accusations of using fraudulent documents to release an inmate, kickbacks from city contracts, and blatant theft of municipal land. Having kicked the hornet's nest, the District Attorney called upon the GBI to dig deeper into these allegations. Entangled in this web of deceit, Johnson now sits in Coffee County jail, relocated from Atkinson County for housing, while Pearson's reputation suffers under the weight of his alleged misdeeds.
The investigation by the GBI has revealed a disturbing pattern of corruption that entails attempting to have an inmate fraudulently released, bribing city employees, and a general conspiracy to defraud state and political subdivisions. In total, Johnson is facing over a dozen charges, four of which are counts of violation of oath of office by a public officer, a serious affront to the position he was sworn to uphold with integrity.
The case is far from closed as the GBI continues its investigation, suggesting the possibility of more arrests in connection with Mayor Johnson’s alleged fraudulent activities.
