Residents in Peoria and the northwest Valley area who've routinely battled traffic on El Mirage Road, here’s something that might be of interest: there's a discussion afoot about extending the road to improve your commute. A potential two-mile extension could stretch El Mirage Road all the way from Loop 303 to Jomax Road. The goal is to alleviate congestion and provide better access to the Loop 303, but as of now, there’s no cash on the table for final design or construction phases.

The City of Peoria, in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), and Maricopa County, among other agencies, they are seeking public opinion on this proposed roadway project. To gather this input, they’ve set up a public meeting for Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The open house will take place at Lake Pleasant Elementary School, with a presentation on the project displayed multiple times throughout the evening alongside other exhibits for review.

Current work includes a Design Concept Report (DCR) and an Environmental Assessment (EA) that delves into various facets of the project. Discussions around lane configuration, pedestrian and bicycle paths, and right-of-way impacts are on the table, as well as the potential environmental ramifications stemming from the new roadway segment, as per the City of Peoria. Topics scrutinized will encompass biological and cultural resources, along with water resources, hazardous materials, traffic noise, and air quality.

The public has until March 28 to submit feedback on the El Mirage Road extension proposal with a 30-day comment period kicking off on February 26. According to the City of Peoria's announcement, interested parties can reach out via email, through traditional mail, or by completing an online survey on the project’s website.
