On Monday, a routine traffic stop in Petaluma became an arrest on multiple charges for a local man. Jose Quintas Lopez, who police say they had previously encountered in an alleged DUI and hit-and-run, was pulled over for a vehicle code violation. During the stop, officers reported that Quintas Lopez tried to give them a false identity and was showing clear signs of intoxication. Despite his refusal to submit to field sobriety tests or a preliminary alcohol screening, the evidence stacked up, including a confirmation from dispatch that he was indeed on DUI probation.

According to a social media post by the Petaluma Police Department, the suspect was taken to county jail. He now faces charges of driving under the influence, driving without a license, and probation violation, among other things. Quintas Lopez's refusal to cooperate with the officers did nothing to help his cause, as they eventually were able to ascertain his true identity and verify his legal standing.

In light of this incident, Petaluma Police took the opportunity to remind the public about the importance of responsible alcohol consumption and the available options to avoid driving while impaired. "We would like to remind our community to plan ahead if they are going to consume alcohol," the Petaluma Police Department said. "Utilize a rideshare, designate a sober driver, or call a friend. Driving under the influence is 100% preventable."
