In a recent operation carried out by Petaluma Police Department detectives and the Community Impact Response Team (CIRT), an individual was placed under arrest on charges of possessing obscene material, as highlighted in an official police report released earlier this week. The suspect, Nicholas Petersen, a 31-year-old Petaluma resident, was apprehended on Wilson Street near a shopping center on Tuesday morning.
According to the police report, detectives received a tip regarding Petersen's alleged possession of illegal digital images and data – the detectives then followed up on this tip and established probable cause. Petersen was stopped and arrested on the strength of an outstanding warrant related to these accusations. Following his arrest, the search extended to Petersen’s home, where a warrant was executed. The specifics of the findings from this search have not been disclosed, reflecting the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Petersen is now facing felony charges under California's Penal Code section 311.11(a)(1), which addresses the possession of images or data involving individuals under the age of 18 engaged in or simulating sexual conduct. The booking occurred at the Sonoma County Jail, where Petersen remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
The Petaluma Police Department has emphasized that their investigation is still active—any additional leads or information from the public could be crucial, and individuals with knowledge pertinent to the case are urged to reach out.
