Phoenix Drivers Face Freeway Closures as ADOT Launches Improvement Projects Feb 7-10Source: Facebook/Arizona Department of Transportation

Phoenix drivers should be aware of upcoming detours and traffic changes this weekend. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has scheduled significant closures and lane restrictions on Phoenix-area freeways from today through next Monday for road improvement projects.

In particular, the eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed between State Route 51 and US 60 for the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. This will begin at 10 p.m. today and continue until 4 a.m. next Monday. On top of this, the ADOT has planned for the northbound Interstate 17 to be completely shut down near Loop 303 in north Phoenix - a move essential for the ongoing pavement improvement work that will last the entire weekend, reported by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Detours will be necessary for navigating these roadblocks. For the eastbound I-10 traffic, the advised primary detour involves rerouting to the eastbound Loop 202 and either the southbound Loop 101 to the US 60 or the westbound Loop 202 to reach the I-10. The ADOT recommends eastbound Loop 303 traffic to turn right only, to southbound I-17, and to use the frontage road detour while avoiding local streets not equipped for freeway-level traffic.

In addition to the freeway closures, commuters will face further disruptions with the closure of specific on-ramps, starting late Sunday and early Monday next week, on-ramps to the westbound Loop 202 at Gilbert Road and the northbound Loop 101 at Cactus Road will be closed for approximately 60 days as part of widening projects. Drivers are encouraged to use alternative on-ramps at Cooper or Lindsay roads for Loop 202, and Shea Boulevard or Raintree Drive for Loop 101, according to ADOT.

As Phoenix grows and improves, infrastructure projects are mainly funded by voter-approved measures, including Proposition 400 and the recent Proposition 479. These initiatives focus on updating the transportation networks in Maricopa County. For those seeking real-time highway conditions, ADOT provides resources such as the Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the az511 app, and the 511 hotline.
