Big changes are coming to Pompano Beach as the Dixie Highway and Atlantic Boulevard overhaul powers ahead with its latest construction phase. Commencing this week, Segment 3A of the Streetscape Project is set to revamp the area from NE 10 Street to Copans Road. According to the city's official announcement, the initial steps will involve tree protection efforts and the careful exposing of subterranean utilities, starting at NE 10 Street and heading north.
In the short term, residents can expect to see minor construction activities that aim to keep the traffic disturbance to a bare minimum. There's a rolling maintenance of traffic (MOT) coming, as crews are set to slowly and strategically close the inside travel lane for about a month, this approach will allow them to keep the wheels of progress turning without bringing things to a standstill. "By late February, the project will ramp up with the demolition and reconstruction of the median areas, which will be reconfigured to enhance safety and beautify the corridor," the city's official statement detailed.
Fueling this significant development are some hefty funding sources, including a $5 million contribution from FDOT and a substantial $25 million from the Broward County Transportation Surtax Fund, not to mention additional financing from the City's General Obligation (GO) Bond and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). This financial mix has been pivotal in propelling the Streetscape Project forward, emphasizing its role as a catalyst for rejuvenating the city's principal gateway.
In keeping with past project phases, city officials have prepared a comprehensive MOT plan in collaboration with various city departments and consultants to monitor the flow of traffic and respond timely to any concerns that may arise. “As with previous phases, a comprehensive MOT plan, developed in collaboration with the contractor, consultants, BSO, and City Departments, will be in place to monitor traffic, address concerns, and provide regular public updates,” the statement from Pompano Beach officials said, a statement obtained by city's release. The aim is to create a safer and more aesthetically pleasing corridor, elevating it as Pompano Beach's new signature entryway.
