Relief swept through the Portland community as 94-year-old Bing Li, who had been reported missing earlier this week, was found safe and is now with his family. The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) expressed gratitude to the residents for their vigilance and assistance during the search. For those who extended their concern, the update that Bing Li was located at a local hospital came as a comforting resolution to a story that could have taken a far grimmer turn.
Bing Li had last been seen wandering away from his home on the 6200 block of Southeast 40th Avenue around 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. His disappearance prompted the PPB to request the public’s help in locating the elderly man, emphasizing his medical conditions, which included heart failure, high blood pressure, and dementia. Notably, Li only speaks Cantonese and is hard of hearing, although he knows his name, details that were essential for the public to identify him.
In their original call to action, which now thankfully serves as a document of the community's collective effort, the PPB described him as an Asian male, 5'6" tall, weighing 170 lbs, and last seen wearing a distinct maroon beanie hat, a white jacket, and dark pants. These specifics, disseminated widely, became the catalyst for community members' eyes to be on the lookout for a man who, but for these details, might have remained unnoticed.
The swift dissemination of information, including Li's description and medical needs, no doubt propelled the circumstances that led to his discovery and return. Indeed, in these cases, the keen attention and prompt responses of a community often spell the difference between a prolonged search and a swift resolution. The PPB's call to the public to keep an eye out was essential, their request was simple: if anyone sees Bing Li, please call 911. That call was made, and now a family has been made whole again.
As the Li family reunites and holds their loved one close, it is a testament to the power of a tight-knit community response.
