In another stride toward a greener landscape, Portland has seen a notable increase in its urban canopy, thanks to the efforts of local residents and the Urban Forestry's Yard Tree Giveaway program. A recent post on the Portland government's official website revealed that the 2024 giveaway was a resounding success, with 2,910 trees finding new homes across the city.
The initiative, now in its eighth year, focused on distributing trees for planting on private properties, particularly targeting areas identified as Priority Service Areas. These sectors, recognized for their lower median household income, modest tree canopy coverage, and higher proportion of residents of color, include neighborhoods in North, Northeast, and East Portland, according to the announcement by Portland's Urban Forestry. The list of neighborhoods that most benefited from the program features Montavilla (266 trees), Hazelwood (190), Centennial (142), Lents (125), Brentwood Darlington (106), and Powellhurst Gilbert (102).
Clearly placing an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility, the program ensured that trees reached those in greatest need. "63% of all trees went to neighborhoods in our priority service areas," the website mentioned. Further assistance by Urban Forestry staff included delivery of 796 trees and planting 300 trees for individuals in need of accommodations. With a range of large growing, evergreen, or native species, 76% of the distributed trees fell into at least one of these beneficial categories.
The Yard Tree Giveaway doesn't just stop at tree distribution, it actively offers support for the subsequent planting and caring phases. Individuals who received trees through the program and require assistance with planting or staking can reach out for help through the program's resources.
There's no denying the enthusiastic response from Portland's citizens, as the giveaway has successfully placed 11,711 trees in residential spaces over the entire duration of the program.
