When the chill of winter descends and the streets of Portland turn to sheets of slick ice and snow, it's the snowplow drivers like Eligeah Hodges who leap into action. In a city where even a small accumulation can wreak havoc on transportation, these workers play a critical role in keeping Portland's arteries clear and its citizens safe. A recent conversation shed light on a day in the life of these unsung heroes of the frost.
Driving one of the Portland Bureau of Transportation's 56 snowplows, Eligeah and his colleagues work tirelessly, moving aside snow and combating ice as the elements attempt to lay claim to the roads. Even though snow can be a playground for some, for Eligeah, it signals the time to mount his truck with a snowplow and spreader, ready to tackle whatever winter throws his way, as an article from the Portland Bureau of Transportation details.
In his fifth year with the City, Hodges holds the title of automotive equipment operator, a job that usually involves hauling materials for street repairs. But with winter's approach, his responsibilities extend to snow and ice removal. "I drive a truck for the street paving crew, hauling hot asphalt or rocks to a street that’s being repaved, or pulling a trailer with an excavator on it. But when there’s potential for snow or freezing rain, we take the trucks we drive every day and put a snowplow on the front and a spreader on the back that puts down sand and salt," Hodges explained, as per the City of Portland.
As essential service providers, Hodges and his peers keep watch over the city during these winter months, ensuring that despite the snowfall and icy conditions, the people of Portland can continue their daily routines with minimal disruption. Standing ready at a moment's notice, these workers adapt their regular vehicles to become mobile fortresses against the cold, mounting their trucks with the necessary equipment to confront the snow-laden challenge ahead.
