The Rancho Cordova Police Department was recently awarded a $150,000 grant by the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to bolster traffic enforcement and safety initiatives across the area in 2025. Aimed at reducing the grim tally of serious injuries and fatalities on the streets, this infusion of funds endorses a bevy of programs designed to clamp down on dangerous driving habits that threaten the well-being of commuters and pedestrians alike.

According to a social media post from Rancho Cordova PD, Sergeant Jeremy Day of the Traffic Unit expressed his gratitude: "We are grateful to receive this grant, which will strengthen our traffic enforcement efforts and improve road safety."

Key elements of the OTS-funded initiative outlined by the Rancho Cordova PD's Facebook post include DUI checkpoints and targeted patrols to net suspected impaired drivers. Drivers glued to their phones will find themselves the focus of high-visibility distracted driving enforcement operations – a response to the endemic device-distracted driving enabled by a culture relentlessly tethered to technology.

The grant also fosters police activity against major traffic violations such as speeding, running stop signs or red lights, and unsafe lane changes—all primary culprits in vehicular accidents. Officers trained and recertified in sobriety and impaired driving assessments, including the Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) programs. As cyclists and pedestrians navigate the urban terrain, specialized enforcement operations strive to shield these vulnerable road users from the hazards posed by inattentive or irresponsible drivers.

Furthermore, an aspect of community involvement nests within the initiative. Traffic safety will be championed through presentations educating the public on the perils of distracted and impaired driving, the swift dangers of speeding, and the nuances of bicycle and pedestrian safety.
