In a move aimed at curbing crime along the Jordan River Trail, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has announced the results of a two-day operation that led to several arrests and seizures. According to SLCPD, the crackdown took place on January 28 and January 29, yielding 13 felony arrests, 10 misdemeanor arrests, and a substantial quantity of illegal drugs.
Dedicated efforts by the officers, who logged a total of 311 hours during the operation, also resulted in the mitigation of 12 illegal camps and three illegal camping citations, as well as the seizure of $2,990 in cash. The substantial haul included 1,770 fentanyl pills, alongside small quantities of cocaine and heroin. As reported by SLCPD, the operation also involved community outreach efforts by licensed clinical social workers, and provided support to individuals in need along the trail, with one person accepting placement at a substance use disorder treatment center.
Police Chief Mike Brown expressed satisfaction with the operation's outcome, stating, "This was a very important and successful operation, and our officers and detectives accomplished a lot of great work in a short time to make the Jordan River Trail safer," as obtained by SLCPD. However, Chief Brown also acknowledged that more work is needed to ensure safety and the availability of support services.
