Green-thumbed San Diegans can rejoice as the city is rolling out a series of Compost Giveaway Events. The initiative is spearheaded by the Environmental Services Department in collaboration with I Love A Clean San Diego, aiming to distribute free compost to residents. According to the City of San Diego, these events will occur over the next few months in various communities, delivering a hefty boon of nutrient-rich compost for gardens across the region.
The compost distribution clearly nods to the city's ongoing environmental priorities. Particularly interesting here is how compost not only energizes plants but also plays a role in mitigating climate change by keeping carbon out of the atmosphere. With compost's water-saving properties and contribution to reducing erosion, the giveaways seem to do more than encourage horticulture. They're about reinforcing San Diego’s dedication to environmental resilience against wildfire, heat, drought, and flooding, as reported by Inside San Diego.
San Diego's Organic Waste Recycling Program, implemented in 2023, has been pivotal in creating the surplus of compost. The city provided 270,000 households with green bins for recycling food scraps and yard waste, an initiative that has paid off, with the weekly collection services yielding substantial results. The compost is processed at the Miramar Greenery, where the materials undergo a natural decomposition to become the fertile substance from which gardeners can now benefit.
