Bay Area commuters have something to cheer about as BART's ongoing efforts to upgrade downtown San Francisco stations continue to manifest in tangible improvements. An announcement from BART informed the public that January saw the opening of a rebuilt escalator at the Civic Center Station and a new protective canopy at the Embarcadero Station.
The new escalator, which facilitates access between the Civic Center Station's platform and concourse levels, was launched into operation last Friday. According to BART's news release, this marks a pivotal step before the replacement of another platform escalator begins, which happens to be the last among the four to be entirely overhauled at this station. Meanwhile, additional progress was evident with completing a canopy at the Embarcadero Station, specifically on the north side of Market Street near Drumm Street. Canopies have already commenced construction on Market Street near Main Street.
Vandalism, however, has mildly setback canopy works. Two dozen glass panels across various stations, including Embarcadero, Powell St., and Montgomery St., were subjected to deliberate destruction late last year. A suspect has since been detained. BART reported that the Embarcadero panels were replaced by the end of January, and they anticipate the installation of new panels at the Powell St. and Montgomery St. stations sometime in February.
