On an unassuming early February morning in Santa Monica, a suspect was apprehended for stealing an egregious amount of copper wire from the city's infrastructure. At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Juan Carlos Gonzalez Alvarado, 43, was found by the Santa Monica Police Department with a city trash container brimming with over 300 pounds of copper wire near Colorado and 15th, reported by the Santa Monica Police Department.
Upon deeper investigation, officers confirmed that the copper wire in Alvarado's possession was identical to material from defacement found in various underground electrical pull boxes along Colorado Avenue. Streetlights along this stretch, invaluable for ensuring public safety, were left in disrepair, the damage shrouding neighborhoods in darkness and posing a real threat to the community. Alvarado, who has a DOB of 06.22.1981, was hit with multiple charges including Grand Theft over $950 and Defacement/Damage over $400.
