Residents of Skokie are grappling with the effects of a water main break that occurred early this morning, leading to widespread flooding and icy road conditions. According to WGN-TV, the incident took place at the intersection of East Prairie and Emerson around 5:15 a.m., causing road closures at McCormick from Dempster to Golf and East Prairie from Church to Golf. Emergency services are urging the public to avoid these areas due to the significant flooding.
Officials have confirmed that the water main break has greatly impacted local water pressure, prompting a Boil Water Order for residents. An update provided by Arlington Cardinal said conditions of low water pressure can potentially introduce contaminants into the water system. The order advises community members to boil all tap water or to opt for bottled water for activities such as drinking, making ice, and food preparation. The police have stated that public works crews are at the scene, working diligently to remedy the situation.
Further consequences of the break include disruptions to local education, with the Skokie-Morton Grove School District 69 canceling classes for the day. The flow of water has not only flooded streets but also created hazardous icy patches and potentially caused damage to vehicles caught in the affected areas. Residents have reported either very low water pressure or a complete lack of water supply to their homes as the village works on repairs.
Skokie's water is sourced from the City of Evanston's Lake Michigan intake, operated by a municipal water treatment plant. This intake is also supplied to the Northwest Water Commission, serving several nearby municipalities. The boil order will remain in effect until further notice, as fixing a major transmission water main is not a trivial task. In the meantime, citizens are asked to minimize the use of tap water for non-essential purposes.
