Amidst growing concerns about public safety during large demonstrations, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has reiterated its dedication to protecting First Amendment rights while maintaining order and safety for community members. The department played a central role in managing a sizeable march this past Saturday, which saw a crowd of around 1,100 participants move from the Utah capitol to Washington Square.
According to SLCPD, coordination with the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) was crucial in implementing traffic control to safeguard both demonstrators and bystanders. Despite the combined efforts, some march participants spilled into opposing traffic lanes, prompting SLCPD officers to step in and regulate the flow of traffic.
One incident during the march caught the department's attention, an encounter between a demonstrating attendee and a motorist near 350 South State Street. "Officers have spoken with all involved parties, including independent witnesses," as per SLCPD. Currently, there have been no arrests, and the investigation into this matter is ongoing.
The department addressed the challenges posed by unpermitted demonstrations. Illegally positioned vehicles that obstruct traffic are not only a concern for public order but also emergency response. Unruly vehicle activity can lead to citations or arrests, the department warned, citing past instances of such occurrences. "Unpermitted demonstrations require additional public safety considerations," as reported by SLCPD.
To mitigate the potential for conflicts and ensure events proceed without disruption, SLCPD has deployed public liaison officers to engage with the organizers of unpermitted demonstrations. The presence of these officers appeared effective as the department reported no issues at an unsanctioned gathering at Washington Square on Sunday morning.
