South San Francisco police made a significant discovery this week, uncovering a stash of over 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks within a storage unit located at a local facility. The haul, estimated to have a street value of upwards of $300,000, was a ticking clock of potential danger quietly residing on Oyster Point Boulevard.

According to the South San Francisco Police Department, the officers were responding to a tip about the large cache when they stumbled upon the explosive hoard yesterday.

Back-up was called in to help safely secure the fireworks. This involved personnel from the South San Francisco Fire Department and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad, who cooperated meticulously to gather and safeguard the illicit load. While the situation was deemed not an active risk to public safety, there's no denying the potential havoc these fireworks could wreak should they have been used indiscreetly in our tightly packed California neighborhoods. "These types of fireworks and related activity can pose a serious threat to community safety," the South San Francisco Police Department stressed.
