In an early morning crackdown along North Temple Street, Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) officers took 59-year-old Darnell Cockle into custody for his suspected role in illegal drug distribution. As per SLCPD, the arrest occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. on January 30, when officers observed Cockle walking in the roadway at 800 West North Temple Street, an area not unfamiliar with drug-related arrests.
The initiative to actively disrupt the ongoing drug activity led officers to conduct a stop and subsequent investigation of Cockle. It was during this time that suspected fentanyl pills, crack cocaine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were uncovered, alongside nearly $300 in cash. This discovery enabled the officers to quickly develop probable cause to charge Cockle with possession of controlled substances with the intent to likely distribute them.
Following the arrest, Cockle faced charges including illegal possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and failing to yield as a pedestrian, as stated by the SLCPD. Additionally, due to concerns regarding the risk of flight and public safety, a no-bail request was submitted to the court.
Committed to transparency, the SLCPD has made available a photo of the seized evidence. Representing a tangible testimonial of the incident, the photo portrays cash and drugs laid out on a table during the booking process. Media outlets have been granted permission to use this photo, duly crediting the Salt Lake City Police Department.
